More about me…
My name is René van Schalkwyk, and I am a registered Educational Psychologist. I have a passion for working with individuals of all ages. I started my academic career at Stellenbosch University, where I first obtained my BEd Degree in Foundation Phase. I then completed my Honours Degree in Learning Support and Community Education. While working, I completed my BA Degree in Psychology as well as BA Honours in Psychology (cum laude) from UNISA. Finally, I obtained my Masters in Educational Psychology (MEdPsych) degree from Stellenbosch University.
I started my working career at a school for children with special needs. After a year I was offered a position as a Learning Support teacher for the Western Cape Education Department, where I worked for 12 years. My career as an educational psychologist started in an Academic institution as I completed my internship at the Centre for Student Counselling and Development (CSCD) at the University of Stellenbosch. Part of the program was a 6 months outreach program with a primary school, where I worked twice a week. It was here where I developed a special interest in working with children and adolescents. After my internship I also completed training in becoming a certified Neuro-Link practitioner.
As I was in the fortunate position to always function within a multi-disciplinary team, I strive to work collaboratively with different role-players (e.g., parents, teacher, school and other professionals) in order to design tailored interventions that address the specific needs of each individual client. My approach to addressing client challenges is comprehensive and holistic. I am fluent in both Afrikaans and English, enabling me to perform evaluations and provide therapeutic services in either language.
